In the wake of a fatal shooting at University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia, people are left to wonder if the hospital security staff is taking the appropriate measures to keep the patients, visitors, and staff safe. Security officials say that protocol was followed, and altering protocol is not feasible. Talk of installing metal detectors was dismissed by hospital officials, saying that these measures would be impractical and “insane.” Officials maintain that this hospital is as safe as any in the system. Maintaining that the shooting was handled well, Safety and Security Director, Johnny Melles, stated that the situation was over as quickly as it started.
