Here’s an article worth a read posted on Huffingtonpost.com. Facing steep budget cuts to its criminal justice network, some residents of a rural Oregon county are banding together to form a neighborhood-based group called Citizens Against Crime, as well as other efforts, to combat theft, burglary, and other relatively minor crimes. The sheriff’s office has stated that the citizens efforts could be a good supplement to law enforcement but they shouldn’t seek to replace it. Meanwhile an academic commentator warns that the citizens’ efforts may inspire vigilantism. The civilians state that their efforts have been limited to passing along information and that their presence is already discouraging criminals.
