Through the new procedure, “Secure ID” the Georgia Department of Driver Safety’s(DDS) is now in compliance with the Federal Real ID Act of 2005. This act was adopted per the recommendation of the 911 Commission, it prohibits the acceptance of DL/ID from non-compliant states at both federal buildings and boarding of commercial flights. The recent implementation of “Secure ID” will increase protection from identity theft while enabling the DDS with the ability to maintain more up to date driver information. Upon renewal or reinstatement Georgia residents will now need additional documentation: birth certificate, proof of social security and two (2) proofs of residency. Not to worry, however, the department’s fee schedule has remained unchanged. Georgia identifications compliant with the new procedure will now have a gold star in the top right corner.
