How safe someone feels in their home affects the value of that home according to realestateconsulting.com. Looking at data from over 10,000 cities, researchers have found that safety is more important that price when someone is shopping for a house. As police forces are cut back, home prices fall. Looking at neighboring cities in California (San Bernardino and Ontario) researchers discovered that in San Berardino, police presence went down, crime went up, and property values declined. In Ontario, this did not happen. In Ontario, crime increased, but only marginally, and property values did not fall as a result. Similar results were found in Florida.
